QEII Hospital Foundation

Integrated Surgical Suite Campaign

Project Complete

The QEII Hospital has developed two Integrated Surgical Suites for the surgeons and patients of our region.

These Integrated Suites have teleconferencing capable equipment which allows our surgeons to perform specialized operations with the guidance of other specialists throughout the world. This is both an education mechanism for our surgeons, as well as an advantage for our patients.

The Integrated Surgical Suite will allow our patients to have their surgical procedure here in Grande Prairie rather than having to travel to Edmonton or Calgary. This will also provide an opportunity for our surgeons to become more specialized in their field of expertise without having to acquire additional specific training elsewhere.

Project Objective

Enhancing the level of patient care offered at the QEII Regional Hospital through the provision of specialized equipment, while increasing the abilities to provide vital life-saving health care services for the citizens of the northern regions of Alberta, northeastern British Columbia and the Northwest Territories.

Project Benefits

The Integrated Surgical Suite is a fully controlled surgical area that connects the widest range of resources to the surgeon and his/her operating team.

Substantial benefits to the OR team include:

  • Allowing for the full performance potential of both operating room technologies and the whole of the OR team
  • Improved control and communication within the operating room
  • Improved communication inside and outside the hospital
  • A safer and more efficient working environment
  • Providing access to the hospital information system, enabling the surgical team to quickly retrieve critical patient data such as CT, x-ray or MRI images
  • Customization for different surgeons
  • Increasing the retention of surgeons and specialists to our area
  • Increasing the ability to recruit a broader field of specialists to the northern region
  • Increased learning and mentoring opportunities for both surgeons and other OR staff
  • Substantial benefits to the patient include:
  • Improved patient care standards
  • More focused operating room staff
  • Enabled remote in-operating room consultation with other experts
  • Potential for more minimally invasive surgeries (MIS) and its associated proven clinical benefits
  • Reduced patient wait times
  • Reduced patient stress and financial burdens associated with travel costs
  • Increased patient ability to retain family support here at home
  • Other benefits include improved operating room efficiency; reduced healthcare costs; and positioning the QEII Regional Hospital at the forefront of surgical technology in the Peace Country Health Region.

Project Cost

The project now provides the QEII Hospital with two (2) specialized integrated suites for $900,000.00.
